Digital rectal examination (DRE) is the most necessary and simple examination method for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and rectal tumors
1. Prostate palpation
1) Normal prostate: Simulated chestnut size, with a transverse diameter of 4cm, a vertical diameter of 3cm, and a anterior and posterior diameter of 2cm. There is a longitudinal shallow groove in the middle behind the prostate gland, known as the prostatic sulcus.
2) Benign prostatic hyperplasia: First degree hyperplasia of the prostate, enlargement of the prostate, simulating the size of an egg, flat at the back of the prostate, and middle sulcus shallows.
3) Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Second degree hyperplasia of the prostate, moderate enlargement of the prostate, simulating the size of a duck egg, and middle sulcus disappears.
4) Benign prostatic hyperplasia: Third degree hyperplasia of the prostate, severe enlargement of the prostate, regular surface, hard texture, simulating the size of a goose egg, and the bottom of the prostate cannot be touched.
2. Rectal palpation
1) Normal rectum.
2) Rectal polyp: A nodular mass can be palpable on the surface of the posterior wall of the rectum, with a relatively hard texture.
3) Early stage of rectal cancer: Nodules and lumps can be palpable on the surface of the posterior wall of the rectum, with uneven surfaces. The texture is hard and represents the late stage of development of rectal cancer.
